Canyon Elves Volunteer at the Annual Santa Clothes Event
Ho! Ho! Ho! A few of Santa’s elves at Canyon were busy yesterday bringing holiday cheer to kids! The Rotary Clubs of Southern Nevada sponsored their annual “Santa Clothes” event for over 350 at-risk children to buy them much-needed shoes, jackets and other winter clothing. The program has operated for 22 years and served thousands of Valley children ages 6-12.
Each child was paired with a volunteer and spent two hours shopping at JC Penney stores (another phenomenal sponsor) in the Galleria Mall, Grand Canyon Shopping Center and Meadows Mall. After shopping bags were fully loaded with their personally chosen goodies, they received new backpacks stocked with toys and candy.
Then they were whisked off to the UNLV football practice field to play sports with UNLV athletes, the mascot “Hey Reb,” and cheerleaders. During lunch, the kids heard inspirational stories from coaches and athletes, and Santa even made an appearance!
Rotary Club member and Canyon President Dale Sprague was joined by Canyon crew Ann Sprague, Joslynn Hupe, Alicia Cobos and Lea Lumba. To our surprise, Lea supplied our team with holiday-appropriate headwear, which was a huge hit with the kids. The children were genuinely appreciative and that made everything so much sweeter.
There are so many ways you can help someone in need. Whether you donate toys, volunteer at a homeless shelter, take coats to those who are cold, foster an animal, or make an elderly person’s day a little brighter, your act of kindness will never be forgotten. Please remember those less fortunate during this holiday season and every season.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!
